What is With These People?

Ron Schiller, the Vice President of National Public Radio, got his college education in music. His NPR biography states,

Schiller studied conducting, composition, and arranging with Karel Husa, Thomas Sokol, and
David Conte, among others. From 1987 until 1994, he served as associate director and acting
director of choral music at Cornell University, where he conducted the Cornell Chorus and
Cornell University Glee Club in performances throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia.
He has served on the music faculties of Cornell University and the Eastman School of Music.

With that music education in mind, Mr. Schiller met with potential donors of NPR yesterday and stated,

Mr. Schiller chimes in later saying, "The main point here is that it is not our responsibility to present the opinion of a non-scientist through our science desk. All educated scientists accept that climate change as fact.

As a statement of fact, this is entirely incorrect. It is obvious he has no idea how science works because science advances when "conventional wisdom" is proven wrong (i.e., the earth rotates around the sun, not the other way around). I've never understood why the mainstream media holds on to belief in global warming, no matter how mistaken, as some type of totem.

Unfortunately, he did not confine his remarks to his mistaken views of science.

NPR was jolted Tuesday by the release of a videotape that showed one of the organization’s fund-raising executives repeatedly criticizing conservatives and Tea Party supporters.
The executive, Ron Schiller, was recorded secretly by the Republican filmmaker and mischief-maker James O’Keefe. On the videotape, Mr. Schiller calls Tea Party supporters “seriously racist, racist people,” and says, “In my personal opinion, liberals today might be more educated, fair and balanced than conservatives.”

Comments

  1. His comments about tea partiers aren't really all that off the mark. The tea party attack on NPR is a tragedy in the making.

  2. Brian,
If you believe Tea Party people are "seriously racist, racist people" you need go set out more. Stop reading the NY Times and go to a Tea Party rally. You'll meet some very nice people who genuinely fear for the future of our nation.

  3. I've seen it first hand. I've unfortunately even seen it in my own family. It's disgusting and I think the tea party represents a devolution of part of our society.
In Texas, there's particularly a lot of hate directed at our neighbors to the south.

I'll take immigrants over tea partiers any day.
