Give the TV Meteorologists a Break Tonight!

As you can imagine, everyone in Kansas is excited by our Jayhawks playing in the national championship basketball game this evening. Even the nurses at my doctor's office are decked out for KU versus UK.

But, there is one group I'm certain is not excited about this evening and that is the meteorologists at KWCH in Wichita and the other CBS TV affiliates in the state. Why? Tornadoes and thunderstorms with damaging winds are forecast for Kansas this evening.

So, they are back in the "darned if you do, darned if you don't" situation: When they break in for a tornado warning (which very well might save lives) the at least 90% of their viewers that are not affected will be upset and will start calling the station.  So, give the meteorologists a break! There is no question that television weather warnings save lives.

Meanwhile, lets look at the potential severe weather situation in the Plains:

Tornado Threat

The light brown 5% area is significant and residents of the area should keep an eye out for tornado watches that might be issued later today.

Damaging Thunderstorm Winds

This is a forecast of thunderstorm-generated winds of 58 mph (50 knots) or higher. Probabilities are elevated in Kansas and Louisiana and significant in the entire yellow region.

Large Hail

Here, you not only have relatively high probabilities (30% chance within 25 mi. of any given spot), you have the hatched area that indicates the potential for hail greater than 2 inches in diameter. A good evening to put the car in the garage.

Reminder: The TV and radio meteorologists are trying to save your life and property if they breaking to the game or any other programing. If you feel you must speak to them, call them tomorrow after the pressure is off. Thank you.
