Smart Cattle


The director of the Elk River Wind Farm in Beaumont, Kansas (pictured above) spoke to us at Rotary over the noon hour and gave us a tidbit I thought I would pass along.

In this extreme heat (105° at last observation), the cattle that graze among the wind turbines line up along the shadows and move along with the shadows throughout the day.

I didn't think cattle would know to do that.

  1. You don't exactly have to be a rocket surgeon to know it's not as hot in the shade. Slugs are smart enough to figure that much out.

  2. Yes, but the way he described them as "lined up" and rotating with the shadow was pretty interesting...at least to this city boy.
