Snow Causes State of Emergency in Virginia

Resident of the Rockies and Great Plains often don't understand why late and early season snows in the East cause such extensive power failures. I took this photo about an hour ago just southwest of Covington, KY and you can see how the wet snow stuck to everything. A number of road signs were obscured by the snow.  This area was without power during the night and had only gotten it back on about two hours prior to the photo.

In Virginia, "hundreds of thousands" of homes and businesses are without power. A state of emergency has been declared and motorists are urged to keep off the roads.

AccuWeather is keeping on the storm with live radar here.
