More Photos of the Kansas School Bus Rescue

From KAKE TV, Wichita, here are more of the Butler Co. emergency management's photos of the rescue near Douglass, Kansas, yesterday afternoon. My primary coverage is here.

By all accounts, the children did exactly what they were supposed to do and climbed out the open emergency door (bottom photo) and got on top of the bus and waited for rescue. The Butler Co. swift water rescue team was there very quickly, set up, and began rescuing the kids one by one.

Jim Schmidt, head of Butler Co. emergency management, is a long-time friend of mine and I have had the privilege of participating in a drill with him and his team. Because they drill, they were able to professionally handle this unusual situation. They did a tremendous job.

Finally, I can't overstress this: Turn around, don't drown. Don't do what this bus did and try to cross a flooded area. Go to my original posting (red link) and watch the short video of a car becoming submerged during a storm chase in what looked like shallow water. It just takes seconds to go from safety to mortal danger.

ADDITIONAL PHOTO FROM KWCH:
The water has stopped running over the road. You can see where the roadway was washed away by the flood.
