Pet Safety Rules for Extreme Cold

I have checked several sources (I'm not a pet owner) and have come up with this list of safety rules for pets in cold weather:

* Protect their feet. Ice and the icy crust on top of snow can cut their paws.
* Watch pets around frozen lakes and rivers and lakes. If a pet falls in, it is extremely difficult for them to escape. 
* Make sure cats and other animals haven't crawled inside the engine compartment before starting the car. The motor retains heat for quite a while after it is turned off. 
* Never leave a pet in a cold car.
* Modify outdoor housing to provide shelter from the wind. Make sure outdoor shelters are be off the ground, bedding is thick and dry and water is fresh and not frozen. Avoid space heaters and heat lamps, which pose a fire risk.
* Keep your dog active, but avoid overdoing it in extreme temperatures.
* Use pet-safe deicers. Every year, there are stories of pets being inadvertently poisoned with deicing fluids. 
* Protect paws from salt. 
* Make sure your pet has plenty of water and make sure the surface of the water does not freeze over. 

* One of the best ways to insure your pets are safe is to keep them with you. 

This is a cold air mass that will set numerous records. It is essential to take special care of your pets during this cold wave.

    Also, routinely check your pet's water dish to make certain the water is fresh and unfrozen. Use plastic bowls rather than metal; when the temperature is low, your pet's tongue can stick and freeze to metal.

The forecast path of the center of Hilary has shifted a bit to the west. This increases the threat to the Southland, especially in terms of flooding.  Rainfall Note the heavy rains are forecast for Los Angeles County. Serious flash flooding may result. Dangerous Travel Conditions - People Reportedly Stranded

Scroll up. --- Updated Information as of 8am PDT You are risking your life if you attempt to travel through the purple area.  While the rain has not begun in coastal California, I would urge you to use this time to make any preparations. Power outages have occurred already in southeast California. Here is the latest radar as of 7:55am PDT. As of 6:40am PDT , the radar indicates moderate to heavy rain falling over desert areas of Southern California and far western Arizona (click to enlarge).  Rainfall amounts for the 24 hours ending at 7am PDT show more than two inches have already fallen. Update on Tornado and Wind Potential; 12 Noon PDT

There was at least one tornado and at least one funnel cloud yesterday.  --- original forecast --- Hilary (the swirly symbol) continues to move NNW paralleling the coast of Baja California, Mexico. The area outlined in red has a significant risk of tornadoe s the rest of the afternoon.  Below is a list of peak wind gusts so far.  Peak winds may increase farther north as the afternoon progresses.  Addition at 12 noon PDT: Sure enough, winds have increased.  Note: If you are in the San Diego area, I recommend not  traveling east on I-8. Heavy rains may cause flash flooding that will involve the highway.
