Northeast: Ice Storm Potential Increasing?

Unfortunately, it looks like it.

This is the latest Sperry-Piltz Ice Storm Index as of 7pm. The index is reliable method for determining the severity of an ice storm, especially as it pertains to power failures.
Since this came out, a new model run (h/t Gary Szatkowski) came in calling for a ¼ inch of ice accumulation in the light green areas and ½ inch in the orange area.

This would, if the forecast is correct, produce values of 1-2 on the index which is high enough for at least scattered power outages. So, you may wish to:
  • Fill you automobile's tank
  • Get extra cash at the ATM
  • Make sure devices like laptops and cell phones are fully charged
