Nighttime Tornado Danger: How to Handle

There continues to be a chance of tornadoes after dark, especially in the hatched area:
The death rate for nighttime tornadoes is about four times the rate for daytime tornadoes. What should you do?
  • Get a weather radio with the tone-alert feature. Ask them to program it for you at the store (it is tricky on some models). I recommend toning for tornadoes only and for your county (or, in Lousiana, your parish) only. The exception would be if you live on the western border of your county/parish. If you program it for too many counties or for too many storms it will unnecessarily wake you up in the middle of the night and you'll be temped to discontinue using it.
  • Go to WeatherCall and subscribe to their service. Because they use the NWS's polygons, they will call you during the night is there is a genuine tornado threat and their system gives you a lower chance of a false alarm. I recommend them even if you have a weather radio as it is always a good idea to have at least two sources for tornado warnings.
  • Put a TV remote or a radio near your bed and flip it on immediately if you hear thunder during the night.
  • If you live in an area with sirens, crack a window near your bed to improve your chances of hearing it.
