Hawaii Suggested Precautions

Because of the threat of two tropical weather systems to affect the islands over the next few days (see below), I suggest the following precautions:
  • Fill your car's tank.
  • Go to the bank or ATM and get plenty of cash. Credit card machines may not work in power failures.
  • Because of the unique situation (i.e., two tropical systems with the potential to cause power failures), get prescriptions refilled early.
  • Keep your cell phone and any essential electronics charged.
  • If you have a generator, test it now -- before it is needed.
  • If you do not have a generator, make sure you have an electrician install it or follow (for a portable generator) the set up and use directions to the letter.
  • Consider purchasing a power inverter (a "poor man's generator") if you do not have a generator. It can be used to keep a cell phone or computer charged or, if you have to keep medicine chilled, a small refrigerator running intermittently (if the inverter is sized properly). The smaller inverters can be just plugged into your car's cigarette lighter.
  • If you live in a wooded area, think about a chain saw or other way to remove downed trees in case of an emergency.
